Well, I’m pretty sure that the number of non local links that point to one site is a major rank factor for most search engines. Excluding Dogpile, which is a search results aggregator. However, it’s true that every search engine estimates the number of links with a different level of importance as well as the anchor text but as I said this is a major factor to all of them.
In fact probably the most important of all factors is the title content of one page so it’s a good practice to replicate the title of your page or the meta-description in your links anchor text. I can guarantee that doing so will rank your page higher for most of the major search engines.
