One of the major factors that search engines take in consideration when ranking your page, is the number of links that are on outer (non local sites) and point to a specific page of yours. But the spiders/web-crawlers don’t just follow these links. They actually read the anchor text in the links. Having said that I’ll give a simple example for a good link and a bad link:

Here’s a bad link:

And here’s a good link:
Post your ads and links on this new board for free!

In the first case the spider may decide that the content of your page is more important just because the number of links pointing to your site is greater than that number of another web page but this link has nothing to do with keywords and thus your chances of appearing on the top of the search results, for a specific keyword search, are really small. However in the second case because the link has a keyword rich anchor text, your page will appear higher in the search results for those specific keywords. So when doing SEO it is a good idea to think about the specific keywords that you want to rank for and to put them in your site and in your links, as well.

Good luck and have fun.

I know that's the case with Google but the rest most probably use a completely different policy.

Well, I’m pretty sure that the number of non local links that point to one site is a major rank factor for most search engines. Excluding Dogpile, which is a search results aggregator. However, it’s true that every search engine estimates the number of links with a different level of importance as well as the anchor text but as I said this is a major factor to all of them.

In fact probably the most important of all factors is the title content of one page so it’s a good practice to replicate the title of your page or the meta-description in your links anchor text. I can guarantee that doing so will rank your page higher for most of the major search engines. :geek:
