Those of you who are new to internet marketing may not know much about the effect of links, both incoming and outgoing. The fact is, in the world of SEO, a websites success is based in large part to the quality and quantity of both its outbound and inbound links. (With a higher importance being placed on the incoming links)
Having a properly diversified inbound linking structure is vital to SEO success for any website, and generally speaking the more incoming links you can acquire, the better search engine ranking placements (SERP) you will receive.
With higher rankings come higher volumes of traffic and that will enable you, the business owner, to generate for income or lead generation possibilities which is pivotal for success with online marketing.

Incoming Links:
Inbound links (also coined “backlinks”) are links that are directly pointing towards your website and webpage’s. Search engine spiders crawl these links and appropriate a ranking based on a variety of factors, namely the quality of the incoming link, but also a slew of other metrics.
The best links come from authoritative sites that have a long standing history with Google. The niche relevancy is also important as well as the number of outgoing links on the site that is linking to you. This can all get quite complex rather fast and the search engine ranking algorithms can be equally as confusing for business owners who may not be as web savvy as the rest of us.
If your business is landscaping for example, garnering links from authoritative sites in your field would be the best way to achieve a high ranking. Getting an incoming link from a big brand or authority website in your field will provide the most value. A key thing to consider with in-coming links is quality is more important than quantity the vast majority of the time.

Outgoing Links:
Outbound links pointing out from your website to properties around the web can often times result in trouble if you’re not careful. External links should be handed out to sites that are deserving, and can in some way help your viewers achieve a certain result or provide a set piece of information they may be looking for.
Pointing outbound links towards a bad link neighborhood can derive penalties from the search engines and cause problems for your linking strategy or SEO campaign, so it is important to take precautions and monitor them closely.
Good practice is to link out to websites that are relevant to your industry and are in good standing as well as providing quality content for your visitors. This helps to improve the inherent value of your own site while maintaining rankings and providing value to your sites users.
